How to choose an ergonomic desk for right-handed people?

deerhorn 23 December 202409 January 2025

Choosing the right desk is the key to comfortable and healthy work. For right-handed people, it is especially important to adapt the layout of the desk to their natural movements and habits. Ergonomics not only affects comfort, but also helps avoid health problems such as back, neck and wrist pain.

Why is ergonomics important when choosing a desk?

Workplace ergonomics is based on adapting the desk, chair and accessories to the user’s posture. The right desk should allow the user to maintain a neutral body position, which means that the back is straight, the shoulders are relaxed and the wrists are placed in a natural position. For right-handers, it is crucial that the most frequently used items are on the right side to avoid unnecessary tension.

Desk layout tailored for right-handed work

A right-handed desk should have space for a keyboard and mouse on the right side. Additional shelves or drawers should also be easily accessible to the right hand, so as not to require excessive twisting of the body. The monitor should be in front of you, about 50-70 cm from your eyes, to avoid neck and eye fatigue.

Ideal height and width of the desk for working comfort

The standard height of a desk is 72-75 cm, which works well in most cases. The width of the top should be at least 120 cm to accommodate a monitor, keyboard, mouse and additional accessories. If you work with two monitors or more equipment, consider desks with a width of 160 cm or more.

Types of desks suitable for right-handed people

Classic straight desk – a universal choice

This is the most popular type of desk, which will work in almost any space. Straight desks with drawers on the right side are ideal for right-handers, allowing convenient storage and organization of documents or accessories.

Height-adjustable desk – an investment in health

For those who value flexibility and health, a height-adjustable desk is an excellent choice. It allows you to change your position from sitting to standing, which reduces the risk of back pain, improves circulation and makes you more comfortable in the long run.

Gaming desks – modern solutions for gamers

For right-handed gamers, gaming desks offer a range of amenities, such as drink holders, special spaces for the mouse and built-in cable organizers. It’s a solution that combines functionality with aesthetics.

Key features of the right-handed desk

How to choose the right dimensions of the countertop?

The desk should provide enough space to spread out equipment and documents freely. A minimum width of 120 cm is the basis, but for more equipment it is worth choosing a model with a width of 140-160 cm.

Shelves and drawers on the right side – convenience and functionality

Drawers and shelves located on the right side make it easy to store and organize things, eliminating the need to reach across the entire desk. This is especially useful in office work, where quick access to documents is key.

Cable organization and space for accessories

Desks with holes for cables help keep the workstation tidy and aesthetically pleasing. Thanks to them, cables from the monitor, keyboard or other devices do not get tangled on the tabletop, which increases comfort and safety of use.

Additional accessories for increased comfort

Wrist rests and monitor stands

Wrist rests are a practical solution that reduces tension in the hands and wrists, especially when working long hours at the keyboard. Monitor stands help position the screen at the right height to prevent neck pain.

Organizers for documents and office supplies

Thanks to the organizers, all the necessary accessories and documents will always be within reach. It’s a practical accessory that makes it easier to stay organized and more efficient.

Beverage holder and other useful accessories

A simple drink holder can greatly improve the comfort of your work, especially if you spend long hours at your desk. It is a small but very practical accessory.

Bottom line – invest in health and convenience

A desk adapted to the needs of right-handers is the key to comfortable, healthy and efficient work. The right layout, ergonomic accessories and thoughtful organization of space make work more comfortable and reduce the risk of health problems. By investing in a desk tailored to your needs, you are investing in your health and productivity on a daily basis.

The desk is fantastic. Stable, solid, and perfectly suited to a loft style. The edges are well-rounded so they don't chafe in your hand. The solid oak top is perfectly finished. The cabinet has solid, self-closing slides. I recommend it.
