Desk for standing work – what height to choose?

Standing desk to reduce fatigue

Standing work isn’t just a trend – it’s a real answer to the epidemic of back pain among people who spend all day at a computer. However, simply buying a height-adjustable desk is not enough. How you position it is crucial. The wrong height of the desk can do more harm than good.

Ergonomic desk height – elbow as a reference point

The basic mistake most people make is to choose a desk height “by eye” or according to general tables available on the Internet. Meanwhile, you will adjust the right height of the desk for standing work completely on your own. Stand up straight, relax your shoulders and bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle – the height of the desk should fall exactly at the level of elbow bend or 2-3 cm below it at the most. This means that your wrists lie freely while writing, without tension or upward bending.

The ergonomic height of a desk for a person with a height of 170 cm is usually 100-107 cm. If you are 180 cm tall, it will already be 107-113 cm, and if you are 160 cm tall, it will be about 94-100 cm. These are only approximate forks, because the final value is also affected by your body build, arm length and whether you work barefoot, in socks or in heeled shoes.

What height of electric desk for your height?

Manufacturers of desks with electric adjustment often specify a range of height – for example, 60-125 cm. Before you buy a particular model, check whether the lower limit will allow you to sit comfortably (the range for sitting position is usually 70-80 cm), and the upper limit is sufficient for standing work. There is no single answer to the question “what height of an electric desk” will be best – it all depends on your height, but also on whether the desk is used by one or several people.

If the desk will be used alternately by several people of different heights, the range of adjustment is crucial. A desk with position memory – that is, the ability to save favorite height settings – is a must in such a case. Electric desk vs. height is a relationship that should be carefully checked before purchase, preferably using an ergonomic calculator available from many manufacturers.

How to set up a monitor and keyboard on a desk for standing work?

A desk with the right height is half the battle. The positioning of the monitor and keyboard is also of great importance. The monitor should be about 50-70 cm from your eyes, and its top edge should be at about eye-line level or 2-3 cm below. If the screen is too low, you tilt your head and strain your cervical spine. If it’s too high – you’re straining your neck muscles and may experience chronic pain within a few weeks.

The keyboard and mouse should rest on the tabletop, not on a separate shelf (unless that shelf is adjustable). A standing desk that is well configured means that your wrists are in a neutral position while typing – neither bent up nor resting on the tabletop at an angle. It’s also a good idea to get a wrist pad if you spend many hours a day at the keyboard.

Work alternates between sitting and standing

Standing work at a desk works best when you don’t stand at it all day – because that’s not healthy either. Research from the Institute of Occupational Medicine indicates that the optimal ratio is about 1/3 of the time standing and 2/3 sitting, with regular breaks for movement every 30-45 minutes. Only an electrically adjustable desk can realistically implement this work model.

The most common mistakes when setting up a desk

Setting up a desk versus ergonomics is not a one-time activity. Many people set up their desk once, at the beginning of use, and don’t return to it. Meanwhile, if you change your shoes, your chair, or your neck starts to hurt – it’s a sign that it’s worth checking the settings from scratch.

Ignoring an anti-fatigue mat is also a common mistake: standing on a hard floor for an extended period of time without proper foot support can quickly discourage standing work.

Here are the most common mistakes to eliminate:

  • Too high a top – shoulders rise, tighten neck and shoulder muscles,
  • Too low a top – you hunch over, putting strain on your lumbar and wrists,
  • monitor too low – you tilt your head, which leads to neck pain,
  • Lack of anti-fatigue mat – pain in the feet and legs after dozens of minutes of standing,
  • standing for too long without a break – instead of relieving stress on the spine, you overload other parts.

Once you’ve purchased it, it’s worth spending 15 minutes fine-tuning your desk according to the principles described above. Standing work ergonomics is an investment in your health – but only if you take it seriously from day one of use.

FAQ – questions and answers

What is the correct desk height for standing work?

The correct height of the tabletop should be at the level of elbow flexion at 90 degrees or a maximum of 2-3 cm below. The arms should be relaxed and the wrists should be positioned naturally, without lifting or bending.

What height of electric desk will be suitable for my height?

It depends on your height and body proportions. Indicative:

  • 160 cm – about 94-100 cm
  • 170 cm – about 100-107 cm
  • 180 cm – about 107-113 cm

However, it is best to set the top relative to the elbow, rather than a rigid table.

Is a height-adjustable desk healthier?

Yes, provided you use it alternately while sitting and standing. Standing alone all day is also not recommended.

How much time per day should one work standing up?

Optimally, about 1/3 of the working day. It’s a good idea to change position every 30-45 minutes and take short breaks for movement.

How to adjust the monitor when working standing?

The top edge of the monitor should be at eye-line height or 2-3 cm below. The screen should be about 50-70 cm away from the eyes.

Is an anti-fatigue mat necessary?

Yes, prolonged standing on a hard floor can cause foot and leg pain. A mat improves comfort and reduces fatigue.

Can several people use one electric desk?

Yes, but the desk should have a wide range of adjustment and a height memory function. This allows you to quickly adjust the top to the user’s height.

Całość wygląda stabilnie i estetycznie. Regał spełnił moje oczekiwania i zdecydowanie mogę go polecić.
